Vertebrate Species Management Officer

The Vertebrate Species Management Officer position will primarily contribute to developing a pig control program as part of the broader Eastern Victoria Feral Pig Control Program. The role will also include working collaboratively with the community supporting a cross-tenure approach to animal control, as well as targeting other vertebrate pest species as required by the Vertebrate Species Management Program. This position will be based in Gippsland – Bairnsdale preferred but requires the flexibility to deliver fieldwork in remote areas across Gippsland and Hume regions.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

Mandatory:

  • Current Drivers Licence
  • Current Firearms Licence
  • Capacity to attain DEECA Firearm accreditation

Preferred:

  • 4WD experience and DEECA recognised 4WD accreditation.
  • Agricultural Chemical Users Permit

Specialist/Technical Expertise:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the control methods for invasive species management and associated regulations in managing invasive species impacts on livestock and biodiversity values.
  • Have sound knowledge and understanding of all Safe Work Practices, Standard Operating Procedures and Job Safety Plans associated with the Vertebrate Species Management Program, and their importance
  • Ability to assess and provide practical advice in the development of effective landholder-led predator control activities.
  • Proven ability to effectively engage with various stakeholders and land managers through positive communication and interpersonal skills and work flexibly within a team environment.
  • Experience working closely with Traditional Owner groups and understanding of cultural safety.

This is a fixed term position available until 30 June 2027. The work location for this position is Gippsland – Bairnsdale preferred.
