This role provides scientific and technical leadership to Agriculture Victoria’s Veterinary Diagnostic Services, supporting Victoria’s agricultural biosecurity through advanced genomics. Based at AgriBio, Bundoora, the position focuses on applying high‑throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies to diagnose, monitor and respond to animal and zoonotic disease outbreaks. The role leads HTS implementation and accreditation, coordinates genomics activities across the Biosecurity Sciences Pests & Diseases unit, and contributes to research, surveillance and diagnostic innovation within a collaborative laboratory environment.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- Experience in veterinary virology and Arbovirology disease ecology and the development and application of a broad range of molecular techniques for the investigation of viruses and vectors in a veterinary science and one health setting.
- Experience in wet and dry lab processes for short and long read high throughput sequencing, including the analysis of sequence data in a Unix/Linux environment, shell scripting, common command-line tools, HPC, and one or more scripting languages (e.g. Python, R). Experience in Bayesian phylogenetic analysis to enable genomic epidemiology investigations is desired.
- Proven experience developing and leading research projects, including experimental design, data collection and analysis and staff management.
- Ability to deliver a laboratory-based quality management system that could be applied to HTS sample preparation and analysis. Experience with good laboratory practices or formal accreditation by NATA, animal/human ethics committees or biosecurity/ quarantine material (i.e., OGTR or Department of Agriculture).
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with and manage staff to deliver concise, authoritative, high-quality information and materials, including reports, briefs, funding applications, and presentations to a broad range of stakeholders using clear and concise language. A track record of first author publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Proven ability to work independently and part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to collaborate and share information with team members and work well with others in pursuit of team goals. Experience in leading and managing the effective performance and development of employees.
- Demonstrated excellence in stakeholder management skills, ability to build effective working relationships by constructively dealing with stakeholder issues in a timely manner. Monitoring stakeholder satisfaction, taking steps to add value for the stakeholder.
- A PhD in molecular biology.
This is a fixed term position available for a period of 2 Years. The work location for this position is Bundoora, Victoria with hybrid work arrangements available.
