Research Scientist - RNAi
Date: 28 Apr 2026
Location: Regional, VIC, AU
Company: DEECA
Agriculture Science and Technology (AS&T) is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join an innovative project focused on developing RNA-based biopesticides for horticultural crop protection. Based at the AgriBio facility in Bundoora (Melbourne) and working under the guidance of the Senior Research Scientist – Biopesticides, the successful candidate will contribute to novel research exploring the application of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) technologies for biological pest management. This role will help establish new capabilities at AS&T in RNA interference (RNAi) to target priority invertebrate pests, leveraging genomic resources to identify and validate novel gene targets through laboratory assays involving live insects and plant material. The position requires a methodical and creative approach to applied molecular ecology, with demonstrated experience in RNA isolation and gene expression analysis, strong molecular biology and bioinformatics skills, and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and collaborators. The role includes external collaboration with chemical engineering experts and contributes to the development of integrated pest management (IPM) tools more broadly, with potential involvement in PhD student supervision. The successful applicant will work within the multidisciplinary Biosecurity Sciences, Pests and Diseases and enjoy access to AS&T’s well-established laboratory infrastructure, flexible working arrangements, and opportunities to contribute to impactful, translational science across the division.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- A relevant PhD degree in molecular biology, microbiology, virology, plant pathology, functional genetics and/or entomology, with expertise in applying RNA for RNAi in invertebrates being an advantage.
- Proven experience to conduct molecular biology research projects in an independent research capacity, including experimental design, troubleshooting, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Background education in bioinformatics and genomics is necessary, whereas experience in molecular entomology is preferred.
- Experience conducting experimental research involving insects and/or crop systems, with preference for experience in applying microorganisms and/or their products in insect bioassays.
- Demonstrated experience with RNA isolation, transcriptomics and quantitative PCR for gene expression analyses, with know-how of applying these techniques to study biological interactions.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team conducting highly technical and creative research. Ability to collaborate and share information with team members and stakeholders, working well with others in pursuit of team goals.
- Well-developed communication skills, with the ability to prepare quality reports, briefs, letters and emails using clear, concise language. Ability to present at conferences, workshops and professional meetings in a clear and interesting way for diverse (specialist and non-specialist) audiences. Demonstrated experience authoring and co-authoring scientific publications including peer-reviewed journals, conference papers and reports.
