Project Officer - Spatial Data

Date: 25 Jun 2026

Location: Melbourne, VIC, AU

Company: DEECA

The Project Officer plays a key role in improving how biodiversity data is managed, analysed and used to support decision-making across government.

Working in a multidisciplinary team, you will engage with complex and often imperfect datasets (e.g. species observations, vegetation and modelled data), applying analytical thinking and technical skills to ensure data is fit-for-purpose and usable in real-world contexts.A core part of the role is identifying and improving how data workflows and systems operate — moving beyond manual processes to more efficient, reproducible approaches through automation and better design. We are looking for someone who is curious, self-starting and motivated to explore data, identify issues and improve how things work, rather than simply follow defined processes.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in spatial information management is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience developing automated spatial data processing workflows, including scripting (e.g. Python, R, SQL). Experience translating manual or GUI-based workflows into reproducible, scalable processes, with an understanding of underlying spatial and data processing concepts.
  • Spatial analysis and data management: experience in raster and vector data analysis, including an understanding of the spatial algorithms and data structures behind typical GIS software tools. An understanding of DEECA data distribution platforms and the issues associated with data publication is desirable.
  • Cartography and web map publication: familiarity with cartographic symbolisation concepts and experience in creating high quality maps for the web and print publication; experience in publishing and administering web map services (ArcGIS suite preferred)
  • Biodiversity data: Familiarity with biodiversity or similar complex environmental datasets, including an understanding of challenges associated with integrating, interpreting and publishing heterogeneous and context-dependent data.
